My Practice

The American Psychiatric Association has proclaimed the following mission statement: Medical Leadership for Mind, Brain, and Body.  I, as well as my staff, have also adopted this mission statement.

Psychiatry is the application of clinical neuroscience to the mental and psychical problems visited upon our patients. Psychiatry focuses primarily on the central nervous system while realizing that the body functions as a whole. There is no substitute or shortcut for the medical education acquired by all physicians, including psychiatrists. There is no "the mind" but simply "mind". Mind is what the brain does.

My practice resembles more an internal medicine practice than what most people think of as a psychiatric practice as informed from television and movies. There is no couch. We are busy. Despite the busy practice, I strive to allow enough time for each patient to have the problem(s) we are treating to be adequately addressed. Before your first visit, you will complete a history that covers your development, family, occupation, education. As well as a detailed explanation of your medical, psychiatric, and medication history. In addition, you will complete two rating scaled of general psychopathology. All of which will be reviewed at your initial visit. At each subsequent visit, you will complete one of the rating scales to allow us to compare your progress from visit to visit in a standardized manner. All laboratory work will be performed as indicated.

I treat most psychiatric illnesses in patients 16 years and older.
I generally do not treat attention deficit disorder in adults.
I do not generally treat patients requesting initiation or maintenance of Suboxone.

I do not engage in forensic psychiatry.
I am pleased and honored to be able to engage with you in the treatment of your psychiatric disorder. However, I do not perform forensic services incident to this treatment. The most common requests for these services come in the context of divorce proceedings and disability proceedings. I will provide your records, upon your request, to the forensic provider of you or your attorney's choice. To engage as both your physician and your forensic advocate creates a dual relationship that the American Academy of Psychiatry and the law has deemed unethical. Please refer to their website if you would like a thorough explanation.

Financial Concerns

I am a preferred provider and accept assignment on the following plans:
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield (both the general plans as well as the state employees plan)
  • United Healthcare
  • Medicare (federal policy only)
  • Medicaid
If you have a plan not listed above or you do not have insurance at all, I will be pleased to provide for your medical needs, but you will have to pay the cash price. We will supply you with the information to file your claim for reimbursement upon your request.

There is a wide variance in the amount I am paid by the above carriers for delivering the same service. The rates I charge are far less than those of my colleagues who are not preferred providers with these plans. Therefore, I reserve the right to limit my population of various carriers to balance the payer mix to maintain financial viability.

Some people are unaware of exactly what services are covered by their insurance and what services are not covered. The following is a list of services I provide that are not covered by insurance:
  • Phone Management
  • Urine Drugs Screens
  • Prior Authorizations
  • Completion of Forms
  • Missed Appointments or Late Cancellations
In general, the payment by your insurance company is for face-to-face medical treatment. All other services not included in the list above may be charged to you, the patient, at my usual and customary hourly rate in 1/6th hour increments. Any request that requires me to review, research, reason and/or respond qualifies to accrue this charge. Services, such as rescheduling an appointment, that do not require my professional time or expertise do not qualify for this charge. Fees are assessed on a case by case basis and in some instances may be waived.

All payments for services rendered are due at the time of service delivery. I do not "carry accounts" or extend credit.

Appointments

You do not need a referral to schedule an evaluation.  Please call the office number: 601-982-1010, and one of my staff will assist you with the process.  Your physician may fax a referral.  In this case, we will still need to speak with you to explain the evaluation process and gather information needed for the appointment. You will need to have all requested information, documentation, and forms completed before your formal evaluation can be undertaken.

If you and I decide you need ongoing evaluation and management of a psychiatric condition, the physician-patient contract will flow from one appointment to the next.  If you fail to maintain your appointment or fail to reschedule your appointment, you will have unilaterally breached the treatment contract and from that point forward there is no reasonable expectation of continued physician responsibility for the treatment of your condition. In most cases,  you may heal the breach by reestablishing treatment.

If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment please notify my office staff at least one business day (24 hours) in advance to avoid the possibility of a late cancellation charge.  If I have to reschedule your appointment, I will extend to you the same courtesy of giving you as much advance notice as possible.

Therapy Associates

Formal psychotherapy, apart from the psychotherapy components utilized in the context of the evaluation and management sessions, is not a part of my service.  For many patients psychotherapy may be an essential part of the overall treatment program. To facilitate this, I have a working relationship with several trusted and well established psychotherapists in town.  I have worked with some of these therapists for about 30 years. Most of my patients find this to be an efficient and cost effective means of obtaining the best medical management coupled with the best psycho-therapeutic management.

In addition to the individual therapists I also have a working relationship with several of the local IOP/PHP providers.  This service provides a level of care that is more intense than routine outpatient management but less intense than hospitalization.

I do not have any financial entanglements or arrangements with the above referenced providers.  Treatment and referrals are based solely on clinical need.
